The issue of safety for both pedestrians and motorists at the Ashtown Roundabout is one which we have been pursuing for several years. Anyone driving through it regularly will be familiar with having to slow down to let pedestrians cross at the Halfway House. People of all ages, mums with buggies, school-children and the elderly all have to take their lives into their hands to get across the main N3 safely.
The roundabout is under the ownership of both Dublin City Council and Fingal County Council. We have written to both on several occasions to, at the very least, talk to each other about the future of this junction. Fingal Co Co’s only response is to plan for a pedestrian crossing across the dual carriageway at the racecourse. Dublin City Council’s last response was to put all plans on hold pending the outcome of consultations on the proposed new Bus Rapid Transit from Blanchardstown to the city centre. The Bus Rapid Transport corridor is unlikely to happen for several years.
The National Roads Authority wrote in 2009 in relation to development at Pelletstown and recommended that the junction revert to a crossroads with a four-way pedestrian crossing. We on the council believe that this is the best option and will continue to bring the matter up with local representatives.
